Apple Unveils iPhone Duo, Its First Foldable iPhone

Apple has entered the foldable phone market with the launch of iPhone Duo, the company’s first foldable iPhone. Announced on September 9, 2026, the device pairs a large inner display with a compact outer screen, and arrives alongside iOS 27 and Apple’s newly upgraded Siri AI assistant.

A Book-Style Fold With Two Displays

iPhone Duo opens into a 7.6-inch inner display, the largest screen ever fitted to an iPhone, designed for content, gaming, and multitasking. Closed, a 5.4-inch outer display keeps the phone pocketable while still covering roughly 90 percent of the screen area found on the iPhone 18 Pro. Both displays share the same aspect ratio, so content resizes consistently between the two.

The inner screen carries a nano-texture finish to cut down on glare and reduce the visibility of the crease, a persistent complaint with earlier foldable designs from other manufacturers. Apple says a titanium plate, reinforced glass layers, and custom adhesives that let internal layers glide “like the pages of a book” are meant to address long-term durability concerns around the folding mechanism.

Built From Titanium, Rated IP68

The chassis is machined from grade 5 titanium with a mirror-polished finish, and the hinge itself is built from more than 100 individual components. iPhone Duo carries an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance, and Ceramic Shield 2 covers the front for added scratch protection.

A20 Pro Chip and Dual-Battery Design

Under the hood, iPhone Duo runs on the A20 Pro, the same chip used in the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, built on a 2-nanometer process. Apple says the chip delivers up to 35 percent better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro, aided by a custom vapor chamber for heat dissipation.

To power both displays, Apple has built in a battery on each side of the hinge that operate together as a single power source. Apple’s testing suggests up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display alone, 44 hours on the outer display, and 24 hours under mixed use.

Camera System Built Around the Fold

The rear camera system includes a 48MP main sensor with an integrated 2x optical-quality telephoto, alongside a 48MP ultra-wide lens. The folding form factor also enables features not available on other iPhones, including a mode that automatically captures a photo when it detects the subject posing, and a “Duo FaceTime” option that lets a bystander join a video call using the outer screen.

iOS 27 and Siri AI

iOS 27 has been redesigned specifically for the folding form factor, moving navigation elements to the side of the screen and enabling true side-by-side Split View multitasking on an iPhone for the first time. The launch also coincides with the rollout of Siri AI, Apple’s more conversational and context-aware version of Siri, which is arriving in beta with iOS 27.

Speaking at the launch, Apple CEO John Ternus said iPhone Duo represents the biggest shift for the iPhone lineup since the original device.
